The Qur’an explicitly acknowledges the moral character of many Christians, describing them as “nearest in love to the believers” (Qur’an 5:82) and praising them for being humble, merciful, and not arrogant. This recognition stems from observed traits among Christian communities: acts of charity, compassion, monastic piety, and devotion to God. The Prophet Muhammad himself experienced kindness from certain Christians, such as the Negus of Abyssinia who protected Muslim emigrants, and Christian monks who recognized his prophethood. Islamic tradition often highlights Christian tenderness of heart, especially in their religious life, seeing it as a reflection of genuine faith in God.
The Qur’an provides a direct and favorable assessment of Christian character:
"And you will surely find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, 'We are Christians.' That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant." (Qur’an 5:82)
This verse identifies qualities of humility, piety (especially among their religious devotees), and a natural affinity for believers. It establishes a scriptural basis for the Muslim perception of Christians as possessing soft-heartedness and kindness rooted in their religious practice.
