Is there more to life than being happy?
And what is the difference between being happy and having meaning in life?
Even though life is improving by nearly every objective standard, more people report feeling hopeless, depressed, and alone. Research indicates that this despair is predicted not by a lack of happiness, but by a lack of something else: meaning.
Many psychologists define happiness as a state of comfort and ease—feeling good in the moment. Meaning, however, is deeper. Renowned psychologist Martin Seligman describes it as deriving from belonging to and serving something beyond yourself, and from developing the best within you.
Our culture may be obsessed with happiness, but seeking meaning is the more fulfilling path. Studies show that people who have meaning in life are more resilient, perform better in school and work, and even live longer.
This leads to a vital question: How can we each live more meaningfully?
There are four pillars of a meaningful life.
The first pillar is belonging.
The second pillar is purpose.
The third pillar is transcendence.
The fourth pillar is storytelling.
Happiness comes and goes. But when life is wonderfully good or terribly bad, having meaning gives you something to hold onto.
