Islamic law permits Muslim men to marry chaste women from the “People of the Book” (Christians) (Qur’an 5:5). This is based on shared monotheistic foundations. However, it is subject to conditions: the marriage must be conducted Islamically, any children are to be raised Muslim, and the wife retains the right to practice her faith. In practice, social, cultural, and legal considerations vary across the Muslim world. Some communities discourage it to avoid religious or family conflicts, but classical Islamic jurisprudence clearly allows it. Muslim women, however, are not permitted to marry non-Muslim men unless the man converts to Islam, due to concerns over religious authority in the family.
Islamic law explicitly permits such marriages under a covenant:
"...and [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you..." (Qur’an 5:5)This permission is based on shared monotheistic tradition. The critical condition is the woman's chastity and the integrity of the Islamic family structure, with children being raised Muslim.
