When Sacred Duties Fall
Prey to Self-Interest
By Zafar Abbas Touhidee
The three
pillars of humanity's spiritual and moral foundation – politics, journalism,
and worship – which are considered responsible for guiding and nurturing
society, have today strayed from their core purpose. These three fields are
fundamentally connected to the sacred bonds of service, truth, and devotion.
However, in the present era, they have become lost in the dark fog of
self-interest.
Politics: From Leadership to Capital Investment
The true
purpose of politics is public service, establishing justice, and maintaining
balance in society. Yet, in today's politics, this purpose has become
subservient to vested interests. Gaining power has become a form of
"capital investment," where a return on the investment made in
election campaigns and expenses is expected. Consequently, public issues remain
unresolved and often deepen.
Journalism: From Truth to Publicity
Journalism
is called the mirror of society, but today that mirror has become clouded.
Truth is sidelined in favor of vested advertisements, propaganda, and partial
truths. Media houses operate under the influence of political and corporate
interests, preventing the truth from reaching the public. The buying and
selling of journalism has severely wounded the moral values of society.
Worship: From Spirituality to Ritual
Worship is
about connecting with God, cultivating inner purity, and serving humanity. Yet,
today, in many places, ritual has replaced worship. Some religious leaders play
with public sentiments to gain power and influence. The tendency to earn
worldly gains under the guise of religion is increasing, wounding the true
spirit of faith.
What is the Solution?
Reform in these three sectors is
impossible as long as they remain within the sphere of self-interest. There is
a need to:
Ensure that only those people enter politics whose
sole purpose is public service.
Make journalism free and impartial so that the truth
can be presented fearlessly.
Purify worship of hypocrisy and ostentation,
promoting sincerity instead.
In the end I would say that politics,
journalism, and worship are the three foundations of society. If these very
foundations become hollow, the entire society falls into instability. The time
has come to awaken our conscience and lead these sacred fields away from the
dark path of self-interest back to the illuminated position of serving
humanity.
