Pillars of a Meaningful Life

Four Key Pillars of a Meaningful Life

1. Belonging
True belonging is found in relationships where you are valued for who you are at your core, and where you offer that same unconditional value to others. It springs from love and lives in moments of genuine connection. Crucially, belonging is a choice—you can actively choose to cultivate it with those around you.

2. Purpose
Finding your purpose is less about what you want and more about what you give. It’s about using your unique strengths to serve others. Think of the hospital custodian who sees their purpose not as cleaning floors, but as "healing sick people," or the parent whose purpose is raising their children. Purpose provides a compelling reason to strive, rooted in contribution.

3. Transcendence
Transcendence refers to those rare moments when you are lifted above the daily hustle. Your sense of self fades away, and you feel connected to a higher reality or a sense of vastness. For some, this comes from seeing great art; for others, it’s in church, in nature, or—for a writer—in the flow of creation. These moments put our lives into a larger, more peaceful perspective.

4. Storytelling
This is the story you tell yourself about yourself. We all create a narrative from the events of our lives to understand how we became who we are. The power lies in realizing that we are the authors of our stories and can change the way we tell them. While you can't change the facts, you can edit, interpret, and retell your story to highlight resilience, learning, and growth.

In the end, happiness is a temporary state that comes and goes. But meaning—forged through belonging, purpose, transcendence, and our own personal story—gives us something solid to hold onto, both when life is wonderfully good and when it is unbearably bad. It is the foundation of a life that is not just pleasant, but profoundly significant.
